Accessing HUJI e-mail through other ISPs
If you are connected to the Internet via other
ISP or via a network other than the Hebrew University, you have three
options to access your mail:
- Web access
Connect to your E-mail through a browser from any computer/network.
- Setting your client's preferences
Reading your mail is always possible. Changing the mail client's setup
is necessary for sending mail as well.
- Forward all your e-mail to another e-mail address
Automatically forward ALL your new messages to
another e-mail account
1) Web access
Connect to your E-mail through a browser from any computer/network.
Using Webmail/Savion web interface requires no re-configuration of email
software, so it's preferable as a short time solution. You can, for example,
access your mail from any Internet Cafe.
- Webmail - For the
mail servers: pob, vms, agri, agri3, mail.ls, chem, FH, math, racah, prism,
md, pluto (pluto users can also access their mail via: http://plutomail.huji.ac.il).
- Savion
2) Setting your client's preferences
Using the second method involves re-configuration of the email
client. It is recommended in cases where you basically use your own
computer and attached regularly to a certain Internet provider or other
network. You might wish to reconsider this solution if you are abroad
- it can result in a slow connection.
In order to be
able to send mail through your HUJI account while connected to another
ISP, you should change the SMTP server (or Outgoing mail server)
of your mail client (Outlook Express, Eudora, etc.) according to your ISP
specifications. To find out which outgoing mail server (or SMTP setting)
to use, contact your local system administrator, i.e. your ISP helpdesk,
or the University Computing Center (as the case may be).
Note: it is only possible to access your mail with a POP
client. You will not be able to access via other mail protocols.
Choose your mail client and operating system from the table below:
3) Forward your mail
Forwarding your mail is recommended in case you leave Israel for a
long period and you will be having an alternative local mail account
for that period. It solves the problem of the slow retrieve of your
mail from Israel, and enables to work in a more simple fashion with a
single local mail account. Please note that once you set the forward
option you will not be able to see your new messages from your HUJI account
- only from the mail account you've forwarded your mail to.
The method of forwarding email depends on the operating system.
On a UNIX server (e.g. cc, md, pob, pluto, agri3,
mail.ls), you create a file called .forward in your home directory.
This file should contain the email address you wish to forward your e-mail
to. Please note that you can forward @cc.huji.ac.il email addresses
either from shum.cc.huji.ac.il or yam-suff.cc.huji.ac.il.
On a VMS server (e.g. VMS, AGRI) the forwarding method depends on the
software you are using, whether BMAIL, or old VMS
MAIL. If you are not sure which email software you are using, select
register in BMAIL main menu, and see if it says you were already
registered. You can cancel your registration by choosing cancel from
BMAIL main menu.
