General explanation about the services
The VPN services solve a problem of users, that need restricted
Internet services from the university (e.g. e-journals), but can't connect
directly to HUJI network and already have an existing connection to a
different network/ISP.
The Hebrew University offers two services:
- VPN Client - A program that needs to be installed on a local
computer, and enables full access to internet resources, such as browsing,
ftp, http, etc.
- WebVPN - Can be accessed from any Internet browser and enables
only browsing in HUJI (e.g e-journals and library databases).
Who can use the services?
The services are available for all students and staff (administrative
and academic).
What do you need to connect?
Both of the services require an OTP card for connecting (for
explanations about the card click here).
If you want to use the VPN Client program, you'll need the card for
downloading the client as well.
VPN Client
General information
VPN client is a software that needs to be installed on a local
computer and creates a secure connection over the Internet. Through
this connection you can access HUJI's network as if you were an on-site
user.
Compatibility
- At present VPN Client
is incompatible with cables connection and with ADSL Alcatel
Speed Touch modem (PPTP) in Israel. We hope for a solution for these connections
in the near future.
- WinXP SP2 - Download and run the utility vpnrule.exe from
our site. The utility will open up the needed ports in Windows firewall
and solve the incompatibility.

The Authentication format:
- Username: ID number (8 digits without the control digit)
You can also use the username you've received when activating the
OTP card.

WebVPN
General information
WebVPN provides browsing connectivity to HUJI restricted sites from almost
any Internet-enabled location using a Web browser, without the need
to install additional desktop software. It enables you to simply open
a browser in any Internet Cafe, enter our WebVPN address, authenticate
and connect to HUJI.
Compatibility
You might come accross incompatibility with sites that use Java script.

You can also use the username you've received when acticvating the OTP card.
- Enter your OTP Password
- Click the Login button
- How to browse?
Once you've successfully logged in, you can browse within the VPN
session. Web site addresses should always be typed in the marked field.
