Changes in HUJI’s Internet connection services
For many years the university has provided
academic staff, graduate and postgraduate students with Internet access
services.
During the last few years this service was
also available on a temporary and informal basis to some of the
university’s undergraduate students and administrative staff.
In the coming months the Computation
Authority will implement a few resolutions that were passed by the
managing committee of the Computation Authority, that includes the
university management and academic representatives of various
faculties, and are intended to increase network security and provide
Internet access only to those eligible for this service.
The
main changes are:
Eligibility for connection from home
- As of September 1, 2004, this service will be provided only
to: graduate and postgraduate students, academic staff, and visiting
lecturers/scientists. It will also be provided to external parties and
administrative-staff members that receive authorization to use this
service (*Note to the faculty of Agricalture's
administrative-staff). A document that describes the eligibility
for various computing services is available at: http://ca.huji.ac.il/otp/rights.pdf.
- Access via 136680 and 1346680 modem lines will be cancelled
on the above date.
- Note: users who are connected to the Internet through a
service provider other than HUJI may continue to use HUJI’s e-mail
services. Instructions can be found at: http://ca.huji.ac.il/otp/isp.shtml
Connection from home – only with an OTP card
Starting June 1, 2004, connecting to the
university from home using remote access services (Modem, ADSL and
Cables) will require an OTP card. We recommend that students and staff
members, verify their eligibility for this service prior to the
purchase of an OTP card.
In order to ease the transition, during the
month of May, the current authentication method will still function for
those who haven’t yet obtained an OTP card.
Note: Students with POB accounts may use their accounts
for connecting without an OTP card till September 1, 2004.
What is an OTP card?
The OTP card is a One Time Password generator. A temporary
password (valid for about 30 seconds) will appear on the card’s display
each time a key is pressed.
OTP passwords uniquely identify the card's owner and nobody, except the
card’s owner, is able to use them.
The OTP password replaces the previously used 5 digit personal code
(that appears on your pay slip or on your student payment book) as the
authentication mechanism in the central information systems (such as
grades and budgets). If you do not own an OTP card, you will still be
able to use your personal code to access these sites. Other sites, such
as most e-learning sites, will not require an OTP password. Please
check the sites themselves for authentication requirements.
The OTP card is required for connection from home; however, it is not
needed for e-mail.
More details regarding OTP card usage are
available in a document that is distributed with the card and at http://ca.huji.ac.il/otp.
What you need to do
- Check your eligibility for connecting to
HUJI from home at http://status.huji.ac.il
(This site can be accessed only from within the
university).
The eligibility is determined according to the status of
students/workers as it appears in the university’s central information
systems.
- If you are eligible for connection from
home and would like to use the service, you need to purchase an OTP
card at one of the Academon stores for 135 NIS (you can also pay
through a HUJI budget). If you already have a card there is no need to
purchase another one.
- You will be able to use the card only
after you carry out the registration and activation process at http://otp.huji.ac.il. It is
important to use the identification data found in your pay slip or
student payment book. This site can be accessed only from within the
university.
**Note to employees of Hadassa and other
hospitals
- After activating the card you will have
to change the Internet connection settings in your home computer.
Guidance and further details can be found at http://ca.huji.ac.il/otp/dialotp.shtml.
Please note that the changes need to be done by June 1, 2004.
Support information is available at http://ca.huji.ac.il/services/internet/otp/otp.shtml#support
Alternative services
Two services are offered to HUJI’s employees
and students who are not eligible to connect directly to the
university. These services are available to all HUJI staff and students
as well.
- Internet connection through Barak 013 – like other
commercial
ISPs, Barak provides a variety of Internet services (whereas HUJI
blocks some of these services because its network is restricted to
academic purposes). An arrangement between Barak and IUCC
(InterUniversity Computation Center) enables university users who
connect through Barak to access some inter-university electronic
journals. It is always recommended to check offers by alternative
Internet service providers (ISP) before concluding a deal.
- VPN Client and WebVPN services provide access to
the
university’s network (and resources such as electronic journals) when
you are connected to the Internet through a different ISP. These
services require OTP for authentication.
Details regarding these services are
available at http://ca.huji.ac.il/otp/services.shtml
Notes:
* The authorization process of administrative-staff of the faculty of
Agricalture will be concluded during May 2004.
** Employees of Hadassa and other hospitals who have an academic
appointment at the faculty of medicine or dental medicine, should
contact their faculty’s personnel manager, to receive a personal code
which is required for the activation process.
