New VPN service (Tango)

VPN services enable users to  access  HUJI's academic resources (e-journals and databases etc.), even if they are not connected directly to HUJI's network.
This  includes  users connected to other ISP's, users from abroad, or users connecting via HUJI's wireless.

Tango VPN is a new improved VPN service that is made available to all students and staff of the Hebrew University, and does not require an OTP card for authentication for Web and Mail services.

Google Desktop V.3 - serious security and privacy concerns

The release of Google Desktop V.3 has raised serious security and privacy concerns. Specifically, the "share across computers" feature that introduces the ability to search content from computer to computer greatly increases the risk to users' privacy. If Google Desktop V. 3 is not properly configured (i.e., if defaults are used), there is the potential for others to access information from an individual's computer.

We STRONGLY recommend to avoid installing and using Google Desktop, and it will be unsupported by the Authority for Computation.

Rules for usage of electronic resources in HUJI

New rules for usage of electronic resources in HUJI are now formally added to the University's policy. Please read them carefully - breaking these rules might result in disabling or restricting accounts:

"Acceptable use of electronic resources licensed by HUJI Access to electronic resources is governed by license agreements which restrict use to the Hebrew University community. It is the responsibility of each user to ensure that he or she uses these products only for individual, non-commercial use without systematically downloading, distributing, or retaining substantial portions of information.
Acceptable use forbids downloading contents of entire issues of a given journal title. The use of software such as scripts, agents, or robots, is prohibited on these resources and on most other public or free government sites, and may result in loss of access to these resources for the entire Hebrew University community".

Windows Vista instructions

Hebrew message: http://ca.huji.ac.il/news/heb237.shtml

During January, Microsoft will start distributing the new version of windows "Windows Vista". Migrating to Vista requires many adjustments both in hardware and in software. For more information on this operating system, see - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista.

Many hardware and software vendors have not yet completed the required changes. The Authority instructions are therefore that you refrain from installing Vista for the moment. Computers that have been upgraded to Vista will not be supported by us. As soon as the incompatibilities with central services and basic applications are resolved we will publish detailed instructions on upgrading.

The hardware requirements for Vista are very high. You will need to upgrade your PC or purchase a new one. There are also compatibility problems with some drivers for peripherals such as printers, scanners etc.

There are some incompatibilities with scientific and graphic applications, browsers, anti-virus and some of the central services, such as: access to departmental and central servers, VPN connection and connection to the administrative databases.

Vista will be offered in several versions - some of them will not be supported by the Authority, especially the "home" editions. If you purchase a new PC, ask the supplier to install XP Pro. You will be able later to purchase at our micro-shop an upgrade to Vista that is supported by us. Current buyers of XP-Pro at the micro-shop will be granted a free upgrade to Vista-Business.

Please send your questions about Vista to vista@savion.huji.ac.il
