New VPN service

Over the past few years we have offered to our staff and students services called VPN client and WebVPN.
These services enabled users to access HUJI's academic resources - e-journals and databases etc., even if they do not connect directly to HUJI's network (e.g. users connected to other ISP's, or users from abroad) These services require authentication through an OTP card.

We are about to launch an additional, improved VPN service (called Tango) that will be made available to all students and staff of the Hebrew University, and will not require an OTP card for authentication.
The services that will be offered through Tango are:

  • Browsing and full e-mail services for Windows/Linux users.
  • Browsing for Macintosh users. (Browsing includes access to academic journals and databases).
  • Additional services other than e-mail and browsing, such as remote access to your office PC, "telnet" etc, will still require an OTP card.

A formal announcement and detailed instructions regarding the new
service will be released shortly after the beginning of the coming
academic year. The service is experimental at present.

Microshop news

  1. A new version of Mathematica (v5.2) is available for academic staff, free of charge.

  2. SPSS ver. 13 (for PC) is available now for purchase.

Trojans & phishing

You are probably all aware of the Trojan horse affair that hit the local news in Israel.

Protecting ourselves, while working with a computer that is connected to the Internet, involves securing the computer itself as well as watching very carefully what we do. Even if the computer is clean and protected - clicking on the wrong link or opening the wrong attachment could result in severe consequences.

You have probably received deceptive messages recently, regarding your account. For example:

"It has come to our attention that your Cc User Profile records are out of date. For further details see the attached document".

These messages, that pretend to be sent from us, are either with attachments or with links. They can be viruses, or phishing scams (deception designed to steal personal information). DO NOT attempt to save or open any attachments that you, presumably, receive from us or anyone else you know unless you verify with the sender that they've actually sent you an attachment. Please note - We NEVER add attachments to our messages/ bulletin distributions!!

Be very cautious regarding links sent to you by mail. It is advisable not to follow the link at all, but if necessary - don't just click it - type it, as the link you see might be deceptive and lead you to a malicious site.

We would like to take this opportunity to emphasize some basic guidelines for safe computer usage:

New virus sending mails from "trusted" addresses

There is a new mail virus distributed in high  circulation  at HUJI.

The sender of the  message  might  be  someone  familiar,  such  as  a  colleague, a friend, or a member of the Computation Authority (typical  sender's name:  admin@ service@ support@, etc.)

Typical subjects you might receive:   **VIRUS**   Security   measures;  YOUR  EMAIL ACCOUNT IS SUSPENDED FOR SECURITY REASONS; NOTICE:  **LAST  WARNING**

Please note -  We  NEVER  add  attachments  to  our  messages/bulletin  distributions!!

The infected message attachment contains the virus and  its  extension  is  .zip.   DO  NOT  attempt to save or open any attachments that you,  presumably, receive from us or anyone else you know unless you  verify  with the senders that they've actually sent to you an attachment.

If you haven't done so yet -  replace  your  antivirus  with  the  new  McAfee  Antivirus,  which  enables a more effective prevention against  viruses.  Instructions:  http://ca.huji.ac.il/services/viruses/mcafee/
