Changing HUJI's anti virus software

Changing HUJI's antivirus from Norton to McAfee: HUJI is replacing the site license for Norton/Symantec's antivirus software with a site license for McAfee antivirus. All copies of Norton/Symantec Anti-Virus installations that were installed with a HUJI license should be replaced with McAfee's antivirus before 1-May 2005.

The reasons for this change are both financial and technical. The new McAfee software includes a module that can centrally take care of updates, upgrades and scans to be performed on the end-user's computer.

NOTES:

  • Ein-Kerem campus users: Those who have joined the new (EKMD) system should not do anything - the process has been completely automated.
  • Rehovot users should wait for separate announcement from local staff before switching to McAfee.

Download

  • The installer is available on our site for the following systems: Windows 9x, Windows NT/2000/XP/2003, Mac os 8-9, and Mac os X. Unix/Linux versions may be obtained from Edmond J. Safra branch.
  • McAfee Anti-Virus is available free for all computers on campus and for home computers of those who are eligible to connect to HUJI from home (if unsure check eligibility at http://status.huji.ac.il).
  • The download at home and on public computers on campus requires authentication.

Installation
Be sure to remove Symantec Anti-virus before installing McAfee, and follow the rest of the instructions on our site: http://ca.huji.ac.il/services/viruses/mcafee/

Microsoft XP SP2
Microsoft released a few weeks ago a collection of patches and fixes for Windows XP, called Service Pack 2 (SP2). The collection contains all the patches that Microsoft released for Windows XP during the last 3 years, up to August 2004. SP2 changes the behavior of some windows components, mainly in order to provide a more secure computing experience than windows users have experienced recently, with better protection from viruses and worms. Microsoft recommends that Windows XP users install SP2. However, it is a major change and should be dealt with carefully. We have prepared instructions; see http://ca.huji.ac.il/services/viruses/sp2.shtml to help deal with the installation and with the changes in Windows following the installation.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR EIN-KEREM CAMPUS USERS: Those who have joined the
new (EKMD) system please ignore this message.

SPSS license for PC users (SPSS single users)
you may receive an error massage when opening the program that the license renewal date has passed.

Clicking OK will enable you to continue working till the end of this month. We hope to receive the new codes soon. legitimate users may email to naamak@savion.huji.ac.il in order to be on a distribution list for the new codes (please write your name and SPSS version)

News bulletin #206

28-January-2004

  • New Email viruses: In the last few days new viruses started to appear which make use of the Email mechanism to spread themselves. When such a virus infects a computer it searches all the address books and contacts it finds there and sends Email to the people listed there with the sender address being selected from the same address book. This means that the sender is probably known to you as well. As you might guess, the Email it sends contains the virus...

We suggest that you do not open attachments, even from people you know (as the attachment might be the virus) unless you are expecting some attachment from this specific sender.

For those who want to know more please see the original CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) advistory at:
    http://www.cert.org/CA-2004-02.html

News bulletin #205
13 -January-2004

  • Frequency of mail polling
Most mail clients (Outlook Express, Netscape, Eudora, etc.) allow the user to set the polling period for checking new mails. Please do not set this value below 10 minutes as frequent polling from a lot of clients slows down our servers.
  • Mailing large files
With the explosion of mass Emails a lot of sites are limiting the size of incoming Emails. Hence, you are requested to refrain from sending large mail items (over 1-2Mb) and chop larger Emails into smaller peices. You may also use ZIP to compress the files before sending them.
  • New software versions at the MicroShop
    • Spss version 12 for windows
    • Adobe Illustrator 11 CS for Win/Mac, you can also buy a Video workshop training CD for additional 5$

Prices and order form can be found on:
