The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Computation Center
News bulletin #155
25-May-2000
Today's topics:
- Proper use policy.
- New Bezeq Tariffs - addendum.
- Harman library news.
o Proper use policy: We've ammended our proper use policy; the new one
is appended bellow and applies to all accounts and network usage
inside the university. A Hebrew version will be available soon also.
Usage of the computing and networking resources (including hardware
and software) of the university should be done under the
guidelines that follow. These guidelines are in addition to the
state's laws and university's regulations, and they are not intended
to cover all aspects (i.e. you can't assume that "everything not
forbidden is allowed"). They are used just to give a brief outline of
our policy. When refering to a computer the meaning is any device
which is capable of doing computations or networking functions.
1. The network and university's computers can be used only for
academic work, or administrative work directly related to the
university's charter.
2. Accounts and personal codes are personal and cannot be shared or
transferred to anyone else.
3. You must keep your code confidential; you will be held
responsible for any action and damage caused through the usage
of your account. You can make use of the university's
facilities only by using your own code; you must not use anyone
else's code.
4. The university is not liable to any damage caused by using this
account.
5. Usage of any software obtained by illegal means or which
breaches a copyright law is forbidden on any of the university's
computers.
6. Using any of the university's facilities to gain unauthorized
access to other systems is forbidden. Network scanning and any
other type of "door knocking" is strictly forbidden. Locating
and using security holes in software installed on any computer
(inside or outside the university) is forbidden.
7. Monitoring communication lines is strictly forbidden.
8. You must not take any action which might damage hardware,
software or data stored on any computer.
9. Using the university's facilities to send commercial information
and advertisements, including mass mails & news ("spamming") is
forbidden.
10. No network services (aka servers) are to be deployed except
those authorized by the computation center. By "servers" we
mean HTTP servers, mail servers, file servers etc.
11. It is forbidden to install a software that allows to take
control remotely of a computer located inside the univerity's
facitlies (like PCanywhere servers), unless it has been approved
in advance by the computation center.
12. Modems can be installed as long as they do not allow incoming
calls (except in fax mode). Modems which need incoming calls
access must be authorized in advance.
13. No device can be connected to the university's network without
getting a prior permission from the communications team.
14. No outside communications lines can be connected to the
university's network. Such connections should be made centrally
via the computation center only.
15. You agree to use the university's resources according to the
law and university regulations. You will be held responsible
for any loss and/or damage caused to the university due to
unlawful use of your account.
16. The university has the right to immediately close your account
in case of infringement of any of the above guidelines.
o New Bezeq Tariffs: A lot of users who call Bezeq to register to the
new tariff program are told that our modems are not listed there;
however, our number is listed in Bezeq's WWW page. Hence, we suggest
that you subscribe via the WEB page and not via the phone call center
of Bezeq.
