                    The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
                            Computation Center

                            News bulletin #150
                              30-March-2000

Today's topics:
- Printing Hebrew text from Netscape.
- ADSL.
- FTP proxy.
- Updating your record in the university's database.
- New version of the university's Shnaton.
- Jobs@huji.

o Printing Hebrew text from Netscape: When printing Hebrew documents
from Netscape usually the result is a text printed in the reverse
direction. A program called Print97.exe resolves this problem and can
  be downloaded from http://shum.huji.ac.il/cc/internetutil.shtml

o ADSL: Bezeq is going to launch soon a new service called ADSL (the
launch is pending approval by the ministry of communications). The
idea of ADSL is that a splitter is installed over your existing phone
line; this splitter allows you have phone calls and in addition a
high-speed data connection (2-8Mb/sec) which is almost "always on".
the price is estimated to be around $30-$50. The data connection can
be to any ISP who is willing to give this service, and we expect the
university to provide this service to its staff.

Bezeq is now asking people to register in order to know where to
deploy this service. If you think you'll need it in the near future
then please request it either via Bezeq's site
  (http://www.bezeq.co.il) or call Bezeq-one at 1111 (yes - 4 times 1).

o FTP proxy: As we wrote in the last news bulletin you should use a
proxy when doing FTP. Since some people misunderstood the last
message, we would like to emphasize that all you have to do is setting
the correct proxy in your Netscape or Internet Explorer. Please
verify that the same proxy that appears under HTTP proxy also appears
under FTP proxy. If you use automatic proxy then you have to do
  nothing.

o Updating your entry in the university's database: All university's
users who has an Email address appear in the university database at
http://www7.huji.ac.il/unew/hunew.shtml . Please review your entry
there and update it if necessary. Note that this database can be
searched from any place around the world, so it is advised to keep
  your record current.

o A New Web Version of the Hebrew University Shnaton
(http://www.huji.ac.il/info/shnaton): The new version of the web
shnaton was released last week. Among others, it has:

  - A new interface which is much simpler to manage.
  - The ability to read the shnaton 'seder' - the course schedules look
the same as in the normal shnaton 'paper' textbook.
  - A better search mechanism letting the user search for courses
according to key words (like teacher name or words from the
      syllabus) has also been added.
  - Syllabuses have been included.
  - Links to the course's web sites have been added too.
  - Improved performance due to the usage of a mSQL database.
  - The possibility of reading the 'seder' by giving a single URL,
    thereby
enabling departments with their own web sites to add a link so
    that
selecting such link will show the department's course schedule to
    the user.

o Jobs@HUJI - a new web service (http://sites.huji.ac.il/work)
Objectives: To provide a place where HUJI members and guests can
exchange information regarding work opportunities at the Hebrew
  University.

If you wish to add a job opening to the board, you can use this link
to the admin area found at the jobs@HUJI site. (Please note that only
HUJI staff members can add new openings to this board; you will need
to have your ID number and your university 5 digit secret code)

The service had more than 1400 visitors since the begining of this
month. We already have 10 job opennings from different departments.
