                            News bulletin #117
                               3-April-1998

Today's topics:
- IMAP vs. POP protocol for retreiving Email.
- Libnet news.
- Macintosh news.
- Novell servers.

o IMAP vs. POP protocols: Most people who use Windows interface for
reading their mail (Eudora, Netscape, IE, etc.) use the POP3 protocol.
This protocol usually removes the messages from the server, so if your
PC disk is wiped out all your saved mail is lost. It is possible to
leave the mail on the server, but then all the mail is left there and
you have no way to selectively delete items.
Netscape-4 and IE-4 supports an additional protocol for retreiving
Email called IMAP. This protocol does not store the mail items on
your PC but instead leaves them on the main server; however, it allows
you to selectively delete items and create folders. Hence, if you use
these versions you should consider the option of using the IMAP
  protocol.

o LIBNET News - News of the Israel Universities Library Network: MALMAD
    2 - Mar. 1998

  ----------------------------------------------------------------------
   - Electronic journals: ABI/INFORM Global now available
   - Web of Science Back Years

NOTE: These databases are accessible from the Harman Science Library
Home Page- both from EJournals and Internet sites!

  ----------------------------------------------------------------------
Electronic journals: ABI/INFORM Global now available
   Sender: owner-libnet@cc.huji.ac.il
   Precedence: bulk

The full-text database ABI/INFORM Global is now available to all
Israel university users. This database contains over 1400 journals
in the fields of business, management, econmomics and related areas.

We are subscribed to the "Global edition" which is the most
extensive edition (over 1400 titles). Not all are available in full
   text.

The database can be searched by keywords or by journal title. The
articles themseves are available in a variety of formats: abstract
alone, plain (ASCII) text and page-image [not all articles are
   available in all formats].

For a list of the journals covered see:
           http://libnet.ac.il/~libnet/abititle.txt

   To access the database itself:
           http://libnet.ac.il/~libnet/abi.htm

Access validation is automatic. You must search from a workstation
with a university internet identification (IP number), including
access from home for those with university internet dialup
  privileges.

Please note: this database is located abroad and therefore
  downloading
of page image files may be slow at peak hours of the day. Consider
using the plain text (ASCII) option often available to speed
retrieval. The service is also closed for maintenance one hour per
  day
(2-3 am USA - currently 10-11 am here) and most of Sunday.

In order to read page image (PDF) files you must have the Adobe
Acrobat Reader program installed on your workstation. Adobe Acrobat
   Reader is available free at:
   http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readstep.shtml

As of today, April 2,1998, incoming data from UMI should be
automatically routed via Machba business class (charged to MALMAD - as
per the MALMAD budget). Please watch to see if there is an improvement
in response time [today itself there is a general foreign
  communications problem!]

   Web of Science Back Years

Acquisition of Web of Science (WOS) backfiles for 1995-1997 has been
approved and the data will be loaded in the near future. Watch the
  WOS
opening screen notice for an announcement as soon as the data is
   available.

o Novell servers: Over the last two years we have added several Novell
servers to institutes and departments in Givat-Ram. We are now moving
users who have an account on HUJIRAM2 (which was the main Novell
server in Givat-Ram in past years), to departmental servers (where
available) or to a new central server called HUJI-GRM1. This will be
done over the next 2-3 months and the affected users will be notified.

Server HUJIRAM2 will be upgraded and will continue to provide support
  for Macintosh users.
