o Formation of the Authority for Computing: In order to cope with the
changing world of computing and communications, and due to the
increase in the number of departmental units involved in this area,
the University's management has decided to change the structure and
responsibilities of the Computation Center. The new unit is called
"The Authority for Computing, Communication and Information
Technology" and will supervise all units and subunits which deal with
computing and information. The main role of the authority is to set
policies, forecast future need, coordinate the computing units, as
well as fulfilling the Computation Center's responsibilities.
Initially, the authority encompasses the Computation Center and its
annexes in the campuses, but over time it will supervise all other
related departments.
The general director of the authority is Prof. Yehushua Sagiv and the
general manager is Mr. Tsvi Kidron.
o Mac's antivirus: The Site License agreement for Dr. Solomon's
AntiVirus has been finalized. It will be available for University
members ONLY, so be sure not to give it to anyone else. You can now
obtain it in the following ways:
* Via FTP. You should use the application "Fetch"
For details: http://mac.huji.ac.il/solomon.shtml
connect to the host: vms.huji.ac.il
Username: anonymous
Password: mac
* Send us an e-mail shirley@cc.huji.ac.il, and we will send it to you as
an attachment
* Come over to your nearest Computation Center with one diskette.
o Macintosh warranty: In order to improve the handling of hardware
problems with computers under warranty, we've established a new
procedure with Yeda. Thus, when you encounter a problem, get in touch
with us, so we can diagnose and forward the problem on to Yeda.
o Macintosh survey: It is very important for us to know information
about the amount and types of computers you've got. If you haven't
forwarded yet the information to us please do so. You can enter our
HomePage http://mac.huji.ac.il/mac.shtml and do it from there. We
will also be grateful if you can forward this information to other
users who did not receive this message and therfore do not exist in
our mailing list. Thank you for your cooperation!
o proxy: We would like to remind you that the university has a proxy
for WWW access which is proxy.huji.ac.il; In order to use it enter the
name "proxy.huji.ac.il" (or "wwwproxy.huji.ac.il") at the fields HTTP,
WAIS, FTP and put 8080 at the port number.
It is advised to use this proxy over Machba's proxies (wwwproxy.ac.il)
as our proxy machine recovers better from communication problems than
a standard PC do.
o Business class: Business class is an improved Internet service. When
you are subscribed to this service you compete on a share of the
international link which is dedicated for this class and is separate
from the other users of the international line. The result should be
an improved service. This service costs $180 per GB transferred with
a minimum of $180 per quarter (although most users do not pass this
threshold, thus paying only $180 per quarter). In order to subscribe
to this service please send a mail message to Simon@cc.huji.ac.il
containing the budget number to charge and the IP name of the station
(or stations) to receive this service.
o Spams: Quite often you get spam mail messages in which you are
requested to answer with "remove" if you do not want to continue
receiving it; don't do it! Usually the spammer is using your reply to
verify that your address is correct and will continue sending you
spams. Simply ignore them.
o WOS at the Harman library: We are pleased to invite you to a WEB of
SCIENCE Training Session. TELDAN has arranged for a representative of
the ISI, Institute of Scientific Information, to demonstrate the WEB
of SCIENCE (Current Contnets with abstracts, The Citation Indexes with
abstracts), which is now available to us.
