- Virus alerts

o Virus alerts: Once in a while we get questions from users who got
alerts about viruses. Usually the alert reads something like "do not
open Email with subject xxxx"; most of them have been found to be a
hoax, but nonetheless, some of them may be real. However, we do not
distribute these alerts due to the following reasons:

  1. There are many such alerts, and most of them are quite similar.
  2. AntiVirus software is a widely used product which you should
     install and update regularly.
It is available free via site license to all the HUJI community.
Copies can be obtained at the computation center's offices - bring
5 blank formatted 3 1/2" diskettes to copy the package.
  3. A virus which has arrived via Email can infect your disk only if
you have executed all of the followings: extracted the message to
a file, decoded it and ran it. As long as you did not run it,
     nothing can happen.
We are not aware of mail readers which can decode and execute
messages automatically, but you should always check in your mail
reader setup that no such switch is enabled.
  4. As usual, do not copy programs from unreliable sources.
