**** The Hebrew University of Jerusalem **** **** Computation Center **** News Bulletin #100 30-April-1997 Today's topics: - 56K modems - what direction will the university take. - 5811 available from Mt. Scopus campus. o 56K modems: As you all know the currently available modems work at top speed of 33,600, which until recently has been thought as close to the therotical limits of phone lines. Recently, there are developments of modems that can work up to 56,000 taking the advantage of Digital lines. The problem is that this new modem technology has yet to be standardized. Currently there are two incompatible standards: X2 from USR and K56Flex from Lucent & Rockwell. All other companies except USR are using the Lucent modem chips, while only USR uses X2, and forbids from X2 manufacturers to support K56Flex (and vice versa). We have no idea yet what protocols we'll support in the future. Since our equipment is currently not based on USR, we will probably support K56Flex and not X2, and when there is an international standard we'll support it. Note that we cannot commit to it, it is just our current direction. Hence, when you buy a new modem, make sure you get a guarantee that it will support at least the standard adopted by the ITU when it comes out (by some path of upgrade), and that the upgrade will be given free of charge (or at a maximal cost you define now). o 5811 available at Mt. Scopus: The internal number for modems (5811) is available on Givat-Ram and Mt. Scopus campuses. __Yehavi:
