News Bulletin #30
8-September-1992
Today's topics:
- Running large tasks interactively.
- Maximum number of files in a directory.
- MIME mail.
o Running large tasks interactively - In the last few days the queue
of jobs waiting for batch execution is becoming longer and longer.
It grows even bigger because of users running their large tasks
interactively. Please do not run interactively a job that is
anticipated to take more than a minute or two. For short jobs (up
to 10 minutes) you can use SYS$FAST queue (only for jobs that do not
need IMSL and/or Exponent).
The priority of users who will run long tasks interactively will be
reduced, as this interefere with the normal usage of the system by
other users.
o Maximum files in a directory - Few users keep all their files in one
directory, and do not use subdirectories to organise them. There is
a limit of about 1,500 files per one directory (not including its
subdorectories). Hence, if you keep a lot of files in a single
directory please beware of that limit and try to spread them among
more than one subdirectory.
o MIME mail - MIME is a new Internet standard which is intended to
allow exchanging non-textual information using the InterNet mail
facility. It includes facilities for exchanging images, voice,
PostScript files, multi-part messages, and more. It will be
described in details in the next "alon" of the computation center.
BMAIL which is active now includes a very basic support for MIME
(you can see the header line "MIME-type" which describes the
message's type. Text/plain is the default type for "normal"
message). BMAIL can now only display text message, images (on X11
screens) and voice (only on VAX-4,000 stations). It cannot create
such messages; in future versions of BMAIL we'll incorporate Hebrew
support and the ability to send image and binary information.
