Hebrew U. Link NEWS

I enclose here the message I'll be sending at the afternoon to the users. I am
not sending it now because he line is currently down due to modem problems.

News Bulletin #8 - IP link to NyserNet

The international IP link to NyserNet has been connected; however,
we still have severe problems with it as described bellow.

The IP line is a 9,600 baud line (yes, the same speed that your
terminal is working...) which connects ILAN network (the Israeli
universities network) to NyserNet which is the american equivalent of
ILAN (not exactly, but close to). NyserNet is connected to other IP
networks, thus connecting to it gives us IP connections to almost all
over the world.

The main services provided by TcpIp that are immediately avaiable
are TELNET and FTP. The problem is that FTP traffic degrades
intercative traffic quite badly, so you are requested to not do FTP of
large files, unless really necessary, untill we have a faster line
(hopefully in a few months).

The line is very slow and not stable yet. It is also not
configured yet to give optimum results, mainly because the other side
(the U.S. side) are in holiday for their independence day. Hence, it
is probable that only next week the line will be working better.
This have other implications: since the line is misconfigured, we
can access at present only machines which are on the core of NyserNet.
A lot of nodes cannot be accessed yet. In general, a node that its name
cannot be found (Telnet reports "unknown host") cannot be connected now.
From the nodes that their names can be found (you get the Trying...
message of Telnet) only few are accessible. Hopefully next week this
situation will be fixed.
As the line is not yet configured properly, users from abroad
cannot Telnet to us, since our machine names cannot be resolved outside
Israel. This will be fixed also with the other things.

To summary: The line is very slow, not stable, and not configured
properly. Hence, it is almost unuseable. When it is fixed, a message
will be put in the login messages. You are requested untill then to
refrain from using it unless absolutely needed. Even after the line
works correctly, please try to use FTP only when really needed, as long
as we have a slow line.
